  2. Intensity: While uncomfortable, anxiety is usually less intense than a panic attack.

  3. Triggers: Often linked to specific stressors or situations.

  4. Physical symptoms: May include restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension.

 

Panic Attacks: The Sudden Surge

 

Panic attacks, on the other hand, are intense, sudden episodes of fear or discomfort. They're like unexpected tsunamis of emotion that crash over you. Characteristics of panic attacks include:

 

  1. Onset: They come on abruptly, often without warning.

  2. Duration: Typically peak within 10 minutes and rarely last longer than 30 minutes.

  3. Intensity: Extremely intense and often described as overwhelming.

  4. Physical symptoms: Can include rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and a feeling of impending doom.

The main distinctions between anxiety and panic attacks lie in their onset, duration, and intensity:

 

  • Anxiety builds gradually, while panic attacks strike suddenly.

  • Anxiety can persist for long periods, whereas panic attacks are short-lived.

  • Panic attacks are generally more intense and debilitating in the moment.

 

Overlap and Coexistence

 

It's important to note that anxiety and panic attacks aren't mutually exclusive. Many people with anxiety disorders also experience panic attacks. In fact, the fear of having a panic attack can itself become a source of ongoing anxiety.
